The covert cancers: Hot Topics in diagnosis of pancreatic and ovarian cancer in primary care

For many cancers outcomes have improved dramatically over the last 10 to 20 years. Sadly, however, pancreatic and ovarian cancer continue to have a poor prognosis which is strongly linked with a later stage at diagnosis. In the absence of a screening programme, GPs will have to rely on earlier clinical diagnosis in symptomatic patients to improve outcomes. The problem we face is that these covert cancers present by stealth. What can we learn from the literature to help us detect these cancers earlier in primary care?

  • An understanding of the recent literature revealing the risk of cancer when patients present in primary care with abdominal pain, the key clinical indicators suggestive of pancreatic and ovarian cancer and when and how patients should be investigated.
