From March 2020, NHS Health Checks were suspended to allow primary care resource to be reprioritised to support COVID-19 and remained low priority whilst primary care recovered from the impact of limited health care services and increased waiting lists. People living in the most deprived communities have poorer health outcomes. By further delaying the NHS Health Check programme, opportunity for intervention for those ‘most likely to benefit’ patients decreased. During 2021/22, a ‘restart plan’ was developed to support practices catch up the back log of patients eligible for an NHS Health Check, with a focus on reducing Health Inequalities for those ‘most likely to benefit patients.’ To reduce pressures on primary care in Leeds, a 3rd party provider was commissioned to support NHS Health Check delivery in practices and in the community. In addition, Leeds GP Confederation engaged with Leeds Community Healthcare to develop a student workforce to support practices restart NHS Health Checks.
