GP appointments hit record high as patient satisfaction rises
)
General practice in England has achieved a record-breaking year for patient access, with GP teams delivering 383.3 million appointments in the 12 months to June 2025 - an increase of approximately 7.6 million compared to the previous year’s 375.7 million.
June 2025 alone saw 31.4 million appointments, marking a new monthly high and representing a 31.9% increase over the same pre‑pandemic period.
This surge in activity is matched by improved patient experience. The Office for National Statistics reports that 72.4% of people found it easy to contact their GP practice, up from 60% in September 2024, while 72.9% rated their overall GP experience as good, compared with 67.4% last year.
Further insights from the GP Patient Survey reveal that 53% of patients found it easy to get through by phone (up from 50%), and 49% found the NHS App easy to use - nearly double the 25% figure recorded a year earlier.
Amanda Doyle, NHS England’s National Director for Primary Care and Community Services, emphasised the commitment and hard work of GP teams in boosting access and turning services around, leading to more than 7 million additional appointments.
Health Minister Ashley Dalton also pointed to efforts to cut red tape, reduce administrative burden, and strengthen capacity, particularly through the 10‑Year Health Plan and the Plan for Change, as key drivers in delivering this progress.
