Consultant Connect is a simple telecoms initiative that enables GPs to obtain immediate, telephone-based advice from teams of local Hospital Consultants going direct to mobile phones rather than via switchboards and connecting in a matter of seconds.
The improved integration that is being achieved between family and hospital doctors and the immediacy of the advice is making a very significant and positive impact on those patient pathways where specialist advice is required, reducing avoidable hospital attendances and helping GPs and Consultants get to know each other again.
All calls are recorded as fully encrypted and highly information-governed sound files and are made available to relevant GP practice and hospital team for medico-legal purposes. Activity logs are also available to Trusts and CCGs that identify how much advice is being provided by the hospitals and what outcomes are being achieved.
Since starting in late 2015 this initiative has been adopted by 40+ CCGs, helping 1600+ GP practices contact consultant teams at 35+ NHS hospital trust. The system is currently handling 50,000+ calls p.a. with GPs connecting to consultants in an average of under 45 seconds.
Consultant Connect fulfils the requirements for the 2017/19 Advice & Guidance CQUIN.
